Canadian troops coming ashore from an LCI(L) close to Bernieres on Juno Beach. Note how the incoming tide has resulted in the thin strip of beach becoming clogged with men and equipment.
The Canadian 3rd Infantry Division, part of the British I Corps commanded by Lieutenant general Gerard Bucknall were assigned Juno Beach. This section of low lying coast with a sandy beach had the problem that there were offshore reefs and rocks. This meant that to allow the incoming tide to cover these obstacles the landing time was 07.45. At the centre of this section of the beach is the small port of Courseulles that was heavily defended.
The landings at Juno were arguably the most successful landings of the day. Come and find out why. Visit the excellent beachfront museum dedicated to the Canadians. Learn what problems were encountered by landing late on the beach.
